College Sweater turned Pottery Barn Pillow

Thanks for Sharing!

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that I still had this sweater in my closet.  I’m not sure how it’s survived a few moves without being sold or given away.
Did you own one of these?  My long torso never liked this sweater!
First I chopped off the arms… then chopped the lower snap section.
Then I turned the sweater inside out and got to stitching.
Remember I am no master sewer.  Replacing missing buttons and patching small holes has been the extent of my sewing expertise… till my resent plunge into blogging.  So if I can do this… you can too!
I just hand stitched to make this pillow cover.  You have most of the 2 sides done already with your existing sweater seams.  So, I started at the top and sewed the arm area, across the top and down the other arm area.
Then I right-side outed (is this a real term?) the sweater and stuffed in my pillow form.  Sewing off the bottom side was the final step.
I love my cozy sweater pillow!  Pretty darn close to Pottery Barn.  Here’s theirs…at $39.00.  I think I’ll keep my free one.
Tomorrow I’ll show you what I did with the sweater scraps!
Don’t forget… Power of Paint Party will start tomorrow (Tues) night at 7pm (PST).

  1. OMG! I had a sweater like that. It, ummm, sort of creeped up, if you know what I mean. NOT comfortable. I think making pillows is the way to go here.

  2. I love it! I saw those in the catalog and was reminded of an old sweater that I have that I should do that with…

  3. BEAUTIFUL!!! I love the sweater pillow look– I have several of them (not PB– I got them on sale at Kohls), but I had to buy mine. Wish I'd seen your tutorial earlier!

  4. Hi! Stopping over fom Homebody. So funny- I totally remember those. I had a short sleeved T version and I kinda remember an embarrassing moment once when it came unsnapped!

Anyway, your pillow looks great! I think I'll go hunt through my goodwill pile and see if I can find any cable knit!

  5. Very interesting sweater. : ) I have never seen a sweater like that. It made a fabulous pillow. Looks just perfect to cuddle up with on a cold night.

    Great knock off.

I'm over from Holly's place. Great party.

  6. Your pillow looks so much better than it did as a sweater! (I didn't know they made those snap crotches for adults.)
    Thanks for linking up 🙂

  7. This is just the kind of project I am looking for to share with the women in my church. I have to teach a class next week about up-cycling and this is a perfect example!!!

  8. So inspiring! I am awful at sewing, but this lil project makes me want to get back on the horse and try!

    🙂

  9. HAHA! that made me giggle. When i first saw the sweater I hadn't scrolled down fully. then bam! snaps like a baby onesie! i love it 🙂 🙂

the pillow is gorgeous, but i am sure glad you showed where she came from!!

    great job 🙂

  10. Your PB pillow is great…and you get to giggle everytime you think of where it came from!! I had t-neck bodysuits- but not a sweater! They worked well with hip-huggers!

  11. I love it!! I made some last week. These sweater pillows are the best! And I cannot believe you had that in your closet!! 🙂

  12. First – the sweater was cracking me up! Second – what a great thing to make from it! I am loving that pillow!
So I have a question about glaze. I have a table that I would like to 'antique' and distress and I think the way to go is to glaze it but I've never done this before. I am new to your blog so I don't know – do you have any older posts about glazing? Help! TYIA!!! If I can figure this out I'm going to be linking up to your Power of Paint party tomorrow!

  13. I like yours better than the Pottery Barn. I had forgotten about tops like that that snapped at the bottom. I had a few of them too!!

  14. Okay, I was going to say "that's a cute sweater" until I saw the snaps. 😉 Love what you did with it though!!! I'm visiting from Kimba's party. 🙂

  15. I remember those onesies. We called them bodysuits. Remember the thong ones? Gross. I never had a sweater one, only icky lycra. Nasty sweater turned beautiful pillow – love it!

  16. ooo the snaps..I LOVE your pillow more then Pottery Barns…Wow I cannot sew for anything but I really want one!

  17. I am cracking up with those snaps. I hated those things. They just didn't feel right. Oh my, and stirrup pants… Why oh why would we have?

The pillow, by the way, is just great. Looks great and so cozy.

  18. I am lovin' the sweater & the pillow. I have never, ever saw a sweater like that! It made a pretty pillow though.

  19. lol Awesome sweater! Is that like the adult equivalent of a baby onesie? 😀

The pillow is gorgeous. I could use at least 2-maybe 4 just like it!

I wish I had something to link up with the party tomorrow, but sadly I haven't done any crafting/painting lately between being sick and having sick kiddos. Can't wait to check out what everyone else links up!

  20. Great job on that sweater. I actually eyed that one one day while online at the Pottery Barn website. You did good and it looks fabulous.

  21. I remember those shirts! All joking aside, this is a great sweater minus the snaps! Such a great find for you! Nice work!

  22. First, that sweater is hilarious! I love that you held on to it all these years.

The pillow looks great! I may have to try that. I have a few pillow forms begging to be covered and this sounds easy enough for me.
