Thrift Store Tray to Christmas Sign
It’s time for our monthly Thrift Store Decor blog hop and this month I’ve got a cool thrift store tray turned Christmas Sign. One of my favorite Christmas songs is Mele Kalikimaka by Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters. There’s just something about the fun-loving, catchy tune about palm trees swaying that lets my mind wander to sinking my toes in the warm sand on Christmas day. So when I found a cool tray at the thrift store I thought a fun Christmas sign was needed.
Here’s the cool tray I found…
It had a tropical wood thing going and it kind of reminded me of the shape of a surf board… so of course my mind went to the beach.
I printed off the words in the font and size I wanted.
I taped it down and then traced over the words with a pencil… firmly… so you can create an indentation in the wood.
Here you can see the letters… they are faint, but enough to be able to paint over.
I used white acrylic paint and a thin paint brush to paint over the traced lines.
I added some easy snowflakes around the words…
and there you have my “I’m ready to escape to a tropical island inspired” Mele Kalikimaka Christmas sign!
Now make sure to check out some great thrift store decor ideas from these lovely ladies…

I love this!!
Love what you did with this thrift store tray MaryAnn – perfect hanging above a fireplace or buffet. I’ve pinned it to our DIY Sunday Showcase Party Talent Board. Happy Thanksgiving!
That looks fantastic! You did a great job shining up that tray, and a very neat job on the lettering!
Way to go!
This is one of my favorite projects. You always do something fun! I think of the song and start smiling.
Thanks Kathy! That means a lot 🙂
Love it Maryann! And yes, now I leave here singing too for the evening:)
I’m ushering in the holiday cheer 🙂
Love the sign!!!
Thanks Julie!
What a cool tray, love what you did with it! Thanks for getting the song stuck in my head 🙂
You’re so welcome 😉
I had to google that tray, it was so mid-century modern COOL. Wish I’d found it! I like what you did. It is actually called “surfboard tray” by Dansk.. danish modern crafters of mid-century modern pieces. $60/ebay.<3
Wow – very cool Randa! The bottom has 2 raised ledges and one had a big chip chunked off, so I knew it wouldn’t work as a tray any longer. Thanks for the info!
I will have that song stuck in my mind all day!!!!!
Took me a minute to realize what ya meant… til I was SINGING it for 10 minutes. Ha! ??
You did a very nice job.
FYI. I have the tray(s) it was actually sold in a set of 3. It’s probably signed on the back. The set is going for over 1400.00, the large tray for over $800.00.
You’re welcome 😉
