Thrift Store Tray to Christmas Sign

Thanks for Sharing!

It’s time for our monthly Thrift Store Decor blog hop and this month I’ve got a cool thrift store tray turned Christmas Sign.  One of my favorite Christmas songs is Mele Kalikimaka by Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters.  There’s just something about the fun-loving, catchy tune about palm trees swaying that lets my mind wander to sinking my toes in the warm sand on Christmas day.  So when I found a cool tray at the thrift store I thought a fun Christmas sign was needed.

Here’s the cool tray I found…

It had a tropical wood thing going and it kind of reminded me of the shape of a surf board… so of course my mind went to the beach.

I printed off the words in the font and size I wanted.

I taped it down and then traced over the words with a pencil… firmly… so you can create an indentation in the wood.

Here you can see the letters… they are faint, but enough to be able to paint over.

I used white acrylic paint and a thin paint brush to paint over the traced lines.

I added some easy snowflakes around the words…

and there you have my “I’m ready to escape to a tropical island inspired” Mele Kalikimaka Christmas sign!

Wow – very cool Randa! The bottom has 2 raised ledges and one had a big chip chunked off, so I knew it wouldn’t work as a tray any longer. Thanks for the info!

FYI. I have the tray(s) it was actually sold in a set of 3. It’s probably signed on the back. The set is going for over 1400.00, the large tray for over $800.00.
