How to Make Macramé Plant Hanger
I’m going to show you How to Make Macramé Plant Hanger! I have been loving the macrame trend and decided to jump on the bandwagon with this easy DIY project. It’s thrift store makeover time again and this month I transformed a 50 cent pot into this cute hanging planter.
I decided to make a jute macramé plant hanger. I’ve got plenty of jute twine, so after I found my 50 cent pot, I only needed a few other items.
Macrame Plant Hanger Supplies:

- terracotta pot
- jute twine
- wood beads
- wood ring
- scissors
Once you’ve gathered your supplies you can make this macramé plant hanger in about 5 minutes! So let’s get started!
How to Make the Macrame Hanger
Making a Macrame Plant Hanger
- Cutting your twine for the length
First, you need to decide how long you want your planter to hang. I decided to cut the twine at the length of 28 inches. With the knots, etc. that put mine at about 24 inches once it was all finished.
So I cut six pieces of twine at 28 inches.
- Tie off twine
Next cut 2 pieces of twine at 6 inches.
- Base of twine
Make sure your 28′ twine is lined up evenly and gather it together. Take one 6″ twine and use it to tie together the 28′ pieces about 3-4″ from one of the ends.
- Groups of 2
Separate your 6 long twine pieces into groups of 2. So you’ll have 3 groups, each with 2 of the long pieces of twine.
- Tying Knots
Now you’ll be tying a knot on each of those doubled sets of twine. I made mine about 4 inches from the base knot. You want to have each of the 3 knots about the same distance from the base knot.
- Drilling the Beads
Now if your bead hole isn’t large enough to slide 2 pieces of twine through, then you’ll need to drill the hole a little larger. Make sure to use a drill bit just slightly larger than the existing opening.
- Bead Time
Right now you have your 3 sets of twine that are grouped and knotted together. Now it’s time to separate them. You are going to take 1 twine rope from one set and grab one twine from the next set over. Take one of the beads and slide it over those 2 twine pieces. You can place tape on the ends of the twine to help slide the twine through the beads. Repeat this process, going in a circular pattern until 3 beads have been threaded three sets of twine.
- Potting
Place your terracotta pot in the center of your twine pieces, spreading the twine pieces evenly around the pot.
- Wood Ring
Now you can decide how long you want your planter to hang. Take the ends of all the twine pieces and put them through the wood ring from the back of the ring. Take the twine pieces and lay them flat, so it’s folding down. Take the other 6″ piece of twine and tie it off. You can trim any excess twine at this point.
Now you get the fun of filling your new cute hanging pot. This was such a fun craft! I now want to create a bunch in different sizes. I think this would make such a fun feature wall!

Your simple plant hanger is similar to a couple I made out of cord for my patio. Once my plants bloom, you can’t even see the hanger anyway!!!
