DIY Family Established Sign
Hello friends! I’m Sarah from Little Red Brick House and I am so glad to be back here again at Domestically Speaking! Today I’m sharing a sweet and endearing handmade family established sign. I’ve been wanting to create something to commemorate this special event and this sign was the perfect project!
It was so easy and took very little time to complete. I had some scrap wood on hand (as usual) and I stained it with Minwax Provencial wood stain first. Then I applied some Weathered Gray stain over the Provencial and quickly wiped it off without letting it soak in. That created the perfect weathered looking stain that I was aiming for.
I printed out a large letter ‘C’ as well as my last name and the year we were married.
I used my favorite transfer method to copy the letters from the paper to the wood. Just color over the letters or image on the backside of your paper, place the paper on the boards and then lightly trace the outline of the letter/image with a pencil. This will create a chalk outline of your letter or image of choice on the wood.
Next I just needed to fill in the outline with white paint. I used “Lace” from Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint.
I wanted the sign to look a little more rustic, so I lightly distressed the paint with some sand paper.
I love how it turned out!

This turned out great! One quick question, when you color on the back of the paper to transfer the image, what do you use to color? Chalk? Thanks for a great tutorial!

LOVE, the distressed paint totally makes it! It’s so clean and simple but is definitely a piece worth talking about. It would make a great wedding present!

I have a friends who has a Family Est. sign on glass in her kitchen and I am always admiring it when I go round. I love the idea of making my own. I’m pinning for that “one day” when I have time!
I’m also thinking what a great wedding gift this would be, maybe when I do get round to it, I can make more than one!
