How to Pick Out the Right Carpet for your home

When we moved into our home more than 10 years ago the carpet was one year old, but it was basic, builder-grade. I didn’t love it at all, but with young kiddos, at the time it was sufficient for what we needed.

Fast forward 10 plus years and that carpet was so ready to be yanked out! The years of kids and pets were showing and I was so ready to have carpet upstairs that I loved. So when you’re ready for new carpet, how do you pick out your carpet.

Questions to help pick out carpet samples:

What color are your walls?
Do you want a solid, textured, or patterned carpet?

The first thing I noticed was all the options that I had with the PetProof line, which is sold at The Home Depot. Options are great, but sometimes that can make it, even more, overwhelming for some people. So hopefully walking you through my process will help you pick out carpet too.

I knew I wanted something in the gray tones. All the walls in our common areas are a beautiful light-medium gray tone called Knitting Needles.

So what color are your walls? If you have walls that are white, you’ve got lots of options. If you have walls in the tan tones then you’ll want something that will complement those tones.

I knew I wanted a textured carpet. I love the look of carpet with multiple tones in it. If you prefer a solid color carpet I would recommend going a shade or two lighter or darker than your wall color. You want to have some contrast to your walls. You don’t want your walls and floors to blur together.

It’s okay if you’re not sure which style of carpet you want. Once you’ve narrowed down to a tone or two then it’s time to get some samples.

The Home Depot’s site was the perfect place for me to narrow down my options. I would make sure to zoom in on various carpet samples to really look at the color within the carpet. There’s no magic sample number. I’d recommend getting 10 or less samples though to make the process easier when they arrive.

I selected seven samples. When my box arrived I was able to instantly cut out three of them. Samples look different in person. Then I brought the remaining samples in the running to a well-lit area where I could see the samples next to my wall color. From looking at the samples in natural light next to my Knitting Needles paint I was able to narrow down my selection to two. The two remaining samples I had were very similar, one just had more white in it than the other. I picked the darker option because of the three teenagers and two pets!

The one I ended up picking, PetProof’s Maisie I in Lost Horizon, has medium grays, dark gray, and even some white.
