Large Farmhouse Metal Basket
Are you searching for budget-friendly farmhouse decor ideas? Look no further! I recently turned a simple $2 thrift store basket into a stunning large farmhouse metal basket that’s perfect for adding rustic charm to your home. This quick DIY project combines matte black spray paint and a wood round for an effortless update that fits seamlessly into any farmhouse-style interior. Whether you’re decorating your fireplace hearth, kitchen, or living room, this upcycled metal basket is both functional and beautiful.

I went thrifting with my youngest daughter at a large thrift clearance center a couple of weeks ago. On our way to checkout, I spotted this oversized metal basket priced at just $4. Even better—it was 50% off home decor day, so I snagged it for only $2! The basket was in solid shape, but the metal was tarnishing. I knew a bit of spray paint and wood could transform it into a gorgeous DIY farmhouse basket ideal for storage or display.
Here’s the before: a basic thrift store basket ready for a rustic upgrade.

Supplies for Your DIY Farmhouse Metal Basket Makeover
Here are the supplies I used to update this beauty. (affiliate links provided for your convenience)
- Fusion Matte Black Spray Paint
- 15″ Round Wood

I gave the metal basket two light coats of matte black spray paint and let it dry thoroughly.

Then it was time to insert the wood round. I found one that perfectly fit my basket, making this makeover SO simple… no power tools this time!

For now, I’m going to keep the natural wood, but I might eventually stain it with Kona, my favorite dark stain that I used on my fireplace mantel.

Then was time for fluffing… adding the pretties to my new to me Farmhouse Basket.

A cute blanket and fall Gather pillow for the basket was all it needed. The first bit of fall in my home.

First I just glanced and thought that is cute. Then went back to read. Wow! You hit the wire basket jackpot! It came out perfect. The round fits so well it just proves this project was meant to be.
I sure am glad you didn’t paint it white. Too much white around. The round of wood was the finishing touch. If kona is like coffee or java that would be great!
It’s the wood base that just puts this over the top! Filing that idea away for sure!
Wow now that’s a quick project!! Love it and the added piece of wood makes it look high end! Pinned!
Maryann,
I don’t think I would have thought about adding the wood round to the farmhouse basket! GREAT idea! Personally, I would have painted it chippy white, but that wouldn’t go with your decor. I think it will look great if you decide to stain it Kona.
Great project, awesome price on the metal basket!

Thanks Kristin!
I love this! It’s perfectly farmhouse with adding the wood round at the bottom. It makes me ready for fall.
Wood always adds that extra touch! 😉
